03/01/05 - Cassaday extends run on Astonishing X-Men
|
|
During WonderCon last month, Joss Whedon announced that he and artist John Cassaday would be continuing their run on Marvel's
premiere mutant title for an additional 12 issues, making it 24 issues total for the duo. The duo will finish up their current run
on the title, followed by a short break, and then get back to the title with an additional twelve issues.
No word on whether the title would simply take a break or if fill-in creative teams would participate. Once they've finished that,
the duo will embark on a "Giant Sized Astonishing X-Men" one-shot.

Silver Bullet Comics recently posted an interview with John Cassaday in which he talks about his work on Astonishing X-Men

Here's a small excerpt of the interview:
MIKE JOZIC: From an art standpoint, are you approaching the book any differently than you would any of your other projects?
JOHN CASSADAY: I try to approach every project a little differently. Some allow more of a chance to experiment than others. This is the first time I've really done a big team book, so I'm looking at it in a more epic sense of scale.

05/09/04 - Cassaday Interview
|
|
Richard Johnston recently interviewed John Cassaday for his "Waiting for Tommy" column on the
Dynamic Forces website. In the interview he talks about Astonishing X-Men, I am Legion and
Planetary.
Here's a small excerpt of the interview:
Richard Johnston: Talking of which, do you see the end of Planetary in sight?
John Cassaday: I've got two scripts in front of me and Warren is in the middle of the next, which
is #22. I plan to plug away at them as they come during my X-Men stint. Beyond that, your guess is as
good as mine. Warren has made noise about extending the series past the original 25 issues in order to
take his time ending it. If it needs more pages and we stretch it to maybe 27 or 28, why not? It has
taken forever and at times has definitely been a monkey on my back, but I absolutely love Planetary. I
know I'll miss it when it ends. However, it will be nice to close the back cover of that last one and
move on...

Here's a small excerpt of the interview:
"If you've never read an X-Men comic, you can pick this up and enjoy it," says Cassaday. "We're paying
attention to continuity, but we're not letting it clog up the works. We're using it to our advantage. To
me, it's the essence of what everyone loves so much about these characters."

04/06/03 - Small Cassaday Interview
|
|
I've discovered a short John Cassaday interview on the 'net. The interview is posted on the
Collector Times website. In the interview Cassaday talks about how he got started in
comics. His past and future work on Planetary and Captain America. Here's a short excerpt of
the interview:
Sidra Roberts:
How did you break into comicbooks?
John Cassaday:
I went to the San Diego Comic Convention in 1996 and took a portfolio. It was the first time
I’d been to it. I’d been to a lot of smaller conventions in Texas and other places, but there were
never any editors to talk to. There would just be some local artists. So finally I got to go to this
big convention, and I met with actual editors. That’s how it worked. A month later I started
getting phone calls.

02/15/03 - Batman/Planetary to ship in June
|
|
Press Release
This June, the acclaimed writer/artist team of Warren Ellis and John Cassaday takes the
archaeologists of the unknown to Batman's home turf in Batman/Planetary: Night on Earth. This
48-page, Prestige format one-shot serves as the reintroduction of Elijah Snow, Jakita Wagner
and the Drummer, and leads into Planetary #16, which has been rescheduled to arrive in comic
book stores in August.
"When we saw John Cassaday's amazing rendition of the Dark Knight, we knew the best way to
reintroduce Planetary to the world was to tie it to DC's best-selling hero, Batman," says Bob
Wayne, DC's VP - Sales & Marketing. "By moving the Batman/Planetary one-shot up in the
schedule, we're giving Planetary more exposure before its return, as well as publishing a comic
that no fan of Warren Ellis, John Cassaday, Batman or Planetary will want to miss."
Batman/Planetary: Night on Earth is a 48-page Prestige format one-shot to be solicited in the
April issue of Previews and scheduled to be in stores on June 25.
Two months later, Planetary #16 will be resolicited in the June issue of Previews with an
in-store date of August 27. The solicitation for Planetary #16 in the February issue of
Previews is cancelled.

01/14/03 - John Cassaday's I am Legion
|
|
John Cassaday has signed with European publisher Humanoids for a large project. The
project that Cassaday is illustrating is entitled I Am Legion, and is written by Fabien
Nury. Nury’s pitch reads:
December, 1942.
The global conflict has reached a fever pitch. The Nazis are at the height of their power, but
the Allies have had their first victories in Stalingrad and in the Pacific. Never has the war’s
outcome been so much in doubt.
Unknown to the Allies, the Nazi’s have a secret weapon, a 10 year-old girl whose gifts could
force them to their knees.
"I couldn’t be more excited to have John Cassaday join us with I Am Legion," Humanoids editor
Paul Benjamin said. "This project came about because John is an avid World War II history buff.
Legion is the perfect project for him to show fans all over the world his passion for this
Earth shaking period of world history."

|
|
Rich Johnston of Rich's Ramblings 2000 posted an interesting rumour on his
site. Despite statements in earlier Ramblings by Warren Ellis, Ramblings heard that John
Cassaday is doing other projects at Wildstorm aside from his work on Planetary... A WildCATS
one-shot!!!

03/14/00 - John Cassaday Doing the Planetary with Batman
|
|
Warren Ellis filled his readers of his Delphi message board forum
(www.delphi.com/ellis/messages) in on early details of his upcoming Planetary/Batman project, in
response to DC's announcing the project at yesterday's Diamond Spring Fling retailer program.
"One day I was working on the plotting of PLANETARY #12. I was going to end the year with a
dissection of The Batman, as well as an investigation by Planetary into other survivors of City
Zero, setting things up for the blistering Year Two. Obviously I wasn't going to use The Batman
himself, I was going to have to come up woith an analogue. Annoying. And then I got a phone call
from Scott Dunbier. He said that DC had been asking for me to write some kind of DC/Wildstorm
crossover book. Evidently, they asked for JLA/AUTHORITY again, but Scott knew to let them know
that Warren wouldn't do that since DC f***ed him on it last time around. So Scott came up with
the counter-suggestion of a 48pp Prestige book called... PLANETARY/BATMAN.
I sort of made a little coughing sound, self-consciously moved my fairly complete notes away
from the phone, and said: "Sure. I think I can come up with something for you there."
PLANETARY/BATMAN: NIGHT ON EARTH -- an extra issue of PLANETARY, by myself and John Cassaday,
and probably either Laura or Dave Baron, I don't think a hard decision's been made there yet.
Now, of course, I have to come up with something new for #12."

01/01/00 - The Incomplete Comicbook Artist Checklist Relaunch !
|
|
After a year of very few updates, 1 January 2000 marks the beginning of change. I've redesigned
the whole site and added 3 new checklists:
John Cassaday:
American artist John Cassaday (1971) is best known for his work on the highly acclaimed
Desperadoes mini-series and Planetary both for DC's Wildstorm imprint. Works of
interest include the Union Jack mini-series and the X-Men/Alpha Flight mini-series.
Alex Ross:
Fully-painted comics are nothing new, but few painters can match the excellence of Alex Ross.
His photo-realistic paintings are a real treat for the eyes. Work highlights include:
Marvels, Kingdom Come, Uncle Sam and his exquisite covers for Kurt
Busiek's: Astro City.
Tim Sale:
American artist Tim Sale (1956) is probably best known for his work on Batman: The Long
Halloween, Superman: For all Seasons and his current work on the new Batman: Dark
Victory maxi-series.
In the coming months I plan to add some new features and upload a Travis Charest and a Michael
Kaluta checklist (and others). I also plan on updating my site at least once a month, with new
additions to the various lists and whenever I have news concerning the artists I have a
checklist of.

10/01/99 - John Cassaday Signs Exclusive Contract with DC
|
|
DC Comics and WildStorm Productions are pleased to announce that PLANETARY artist John Cassaday
has signed an exclusive contract. Known for his distinctive and stylish portrayals of Warren
Ellis' metahuman investigators, his art adds as much to the character of the title as the
writing.
Cassaday first came to WildStorm's DESPERADOES: A MOMENT'S SUNLIGHT before making waves on Union
Jack for Marvel. His take on the Western landscapes and desire to challenge himself with
something different led a union between him and writer Warren Ellis (TRANSMETROPOLITAN, THE
AUTHORITY, PLANETARY), a visual and conceptual feast within the WildStorm Universe. "Whenever
Warren [Ellis] sends me a script, it's like Christmas," says Cassaday.
Signing an exclusive contract with DC was easy for Cassaday because "PLANETARY is exactly what I
want to be doing right now. Working so much this last year with Scott Dunbier, John Layman and
the rest of the Wildstorm and DC crew has been the most fulfilling experience of my career thus
far. DC and Wildstorm offer me the greatest degree of artistic freedom and professionalism. They
run a good strong ship and I intend to stay the course."
In addition to the WildStorm monthly title, he plans to do several upcoming Batman and Superman
covers. WildStorm Group Editor Scott Dunbier is not amazed that "John in a very short time has
become one of WildStorm's premier artists, going from DESPERADOES to a very successful
high-profile book. It's a rare combo to get someone so talented and with such a great work ethic
be such a great guy too."
