Alan Donald: Peter Parker?
Mark Buckingham: Oh, yes. Long story short, house move fell thorough, broke my arm, Humberto
[Ramos] helped out, Marvel loved Humberto, asked him to stay with the company; Humberto loved

10/08/02 - Astro City without Alex Ross?!
|
|
Recently, Rich Johnston, who writes the Lying in the Gutters column for Comic Book
Resources, published an interesting rumour about Alex Ross:
"I hear that Alex Ross will not be contributing covers or designs to "Astro City" when it kicks
off again in the near future. Despite the medical reasons given by Kurt Busiek, Ross is annoyed
that Busiek found the ability to write "Power Company," "Thunderbolts" and "Avengers," but not
"Astro City" over the past year. And now Ross is a little miffed with Busiek."

08/20/02 - Tim Sale to tackle Hulk: Gray
|
During a panel at the San Diego Comic Convention, writer Jeph Loeb announced that his next
collaboration with artist Tim Sale would be Hulk: Gray.
"Tim did a drawing last year for a fan*. honestly, when you look at it, you say, OK, I want to
see that. It's the biggest, baddest, meanest Hulk you've ever seen," Jeph Loeb said.
"It will take place essentially between issue one and issue two where, for reasons only
understood to Stan [Lee], they turned Hulk from gray to green. ... What's interesting to Tim
and I is this monster, and how this monster released his inhibitions and destroyed his life."
Look for Betty Ross, Thunderbolt Ross and Glenn Talbot to all play a role, as does Rick Jones,
as "the gigantic pain in the ass that he was back then," Loeb said.
*) It looks like I'm the fan Jeph Loeb was talking about. Someone at Marvel found my
sketch of the Hulk by Sale on my site and sent it out with a press release, announcing the
project. If you like to use the image in question on your site, please be kind enough to give
me a nice "courtesy of..." mention

also released all of Ladronn’s art for the comic - plus more - on a limited edition CD-ROM.

08/11/02 - One Major Update Coming Up! - PART THREE
|
|
I've uploaded three new checklists to my site:
Michael Wm. Kaluta:
The art of Michael Kaluta is heavely influenced by the art of Roy Krenkel, Aubrey
Beardsley and Czech art nouveau master, Alphonse Mucha. Great examples of his work can be found
in Starstruck, The Shadow and his numerous covers for Books of Magic.
Frank Quitely:
Scottish artist Frank Quitely, is best known for his work on The Authority with
writer Mark Millar and New X-Men with writer Grant Morrison.
Eduardo Risso:
Argentinian artist Eduardo Risso, is probably best known for his collaborations with writer
Brian Azzarello on 100 Bullets and Jonny Double, both for DC/Vertigo.
For now I'll leave you yet again with 2 sketches I obtained in Bristol. This time they are both
by Mark Buckingham.

07/08/02 - Wizard World Chicago Con News Tidbits
|
|
The Wizard World Chicago convention yielded some very interesting news tidbits:
- Joe Quesada announced that artist Jae Lee will follow Trevor Hairsine and pencil four
issues of the ongoing Captain America series (issues #12-15), and he added "if the god’s smile
upon us", John Cassaday will return to the series at that point, ideally with issue #16.
- Mark Buckingham's story arc on Fables, starting with #6, is called "Animal Farm" and
deals with the characters who can't pass as humans.
- J.G. Jones is doing eight covers for Y - The Last Man series.
- Though not officially announced at the DC panel, reps at Alex Ross’ booth are
confirming that the artist has another tabloid-sized special in the works for release in
November 2003, starring the JLA. This project will be even larger in scope however, as
Ross’ reps say it’s currently planned to be 96-pages.
Ross reportedly also wants to do a regular comic book size prelude to that project for
release this fall, though DC did not comment on either of these plans.
Ross’ people also say there is talk of a future slipcase (a very large slipcase) edition
collecting all the tabloid-sized specials (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman,
Shazam, JLA and the prelude).
- Wildstorm's editor-in-chief Scott Dunbier said he hopes to get Planetary and Kurt Busiek’s
Astro City on a bi-monthly shipping schedules soon.
- The New X-Men art lineup includes John Paul Leon on #130, Phil Jimenez on #131-132, Ethan
Van Sciver on #133-134 and Frank Quitely on #135-138 or -139.
Marvel also said that it hopes to have Quitely draw all of the series' covers.
- An Incredible Hulk hardcover is scheduled for November, collecting the first two arcs
written by Bruce Jones (with art by John Romita Jr. and Lee Weeks), as well as the
Startling Stories: Banner mini-series by Brian Azzarello and Richard Corben.

Marvel is going to launch three new series in September - one written by Jemas, one edited and

would continue on as ongoing series, with the "losers" ending after the 6th issue.
The series edited by Joe Quesada is called Ultimate Adventures. It's written by Ron Zimmerman

of 2000. Fans have at least five more issues of his work on Hip to look forward to and Ladronn

Russell Lissau: Love triangles pop up in your stories from time to time. "Daredevil:
Yellow" certainly had a biggie; "Spider-Man: Blue" will as well. Are you a romantic at heart?
Why turn superhero stories into romance comics?
Tim Sale: I am indeed a romantic at heart, as is Jeph, and sentiment is the yang to our
melodrama's yin of violence. No one does a more sentimental Batman than Loeb and Sale, thank
you very much. I think when you deal in melodrama, you need to have that.

04/01/02 - Daredevil: Yellow HC extra's
|
|
Jeph Loeb has posted a message on the DC Comics Message Boards concerning the extra's
you can expect in the upcoming Daredevil: Yellow HC. This is what he had to say:
...
"I can tell you that there will be between 10-16 pages of artwork and material that hasn't been
seen (at least in this form). We've planned to show a sequence of pages that will start with
script, then show Tim's layouts, his rough pencils, pencils, then inks and then his ink wash so
the readers can see the entire process.
In addition there will be artwork that Tim chose to "go another way" -- some covers we didn't
use -- all gorgeous stuff (Tim is such a perfectionist) with hopefully color commentary from
me.
The book's designs are being handled by Richard Starkings and John Roshell at Comicraft who
have done brilliant and stunning work on such things as the Astro City hardbacks and the Danger
Girl collection. They are, quite simply, the best collected edition designers out there (and
pals to boot!).
In addition, the book WILL be oversized -- bigger than a Masterworks, but not quite the size of
an "Album" as you would find in France (or so is my understanding). It will not be a treasury
sized edition as reported elsewhere, but should make a great looking coffee table book.
We're very pleased with the production values that The Marvel Knights provided us with (and
many of you were kind enough to notice), so we have no doubt that the hardback will be a
handsome edition and addition to the growing Loeb/Sale library."

|
|
Artist Alex Ross will design the commemorative poster for the 74th Academy Awards©
Presentation
"I've always wanted to make these heroic figures look real," Ross explained. "I think if people

are also possible.
"Throughout my career, I've gotten to paint some larger-than-life iconic figures - and you
can't do much better than the Oscar statuette as far as icons are concerned. Oscar is a hero to
a lot of people in Hollywood and I'm looking forward to bringing out that heroic quality in
this poster."
Ross will be present when the 74th Awards poster is unveiled at a special event which will take
place in early January at Hollywood & Highland®. Some 50,000 copies of the poster will be
